Agent Orchestration Frameworks

Code-level frameworks for coordinating multiple AI agents, state, tools, and human-in-the-loop across long-running workflows. Three architectural families: graph-based (LangGraph, AutoGen v0.4), role-based (CrewAI, OpenAI Agents SDK), and durable-execution (Temporal, Inngest, Mastra, Letta).

Backend-as-a-Service

Platforms that hand an application its entire backend as a managed service: a database, authentication, file storage, realtime subscriptions and serverless functions behind one SDK. The category exists as an answer to Firebase, and unlike Firebase every entrant ranked here publishes the server you would run, so each can be judged on evidence anyone can re-check.

Data Pipeline Orchestration

The layer that decides what runs, when, and what happens when it fails: DAG schedulers, asset-aware orchestrators and declarative pipeline engines for data and ML workloads. Every entry here is judged on scheduling, backfills, partitions, lineage and recovery over datasets. Durable-execution engines for application workflows — Temporal, Inngest and the agent frameworks — solve an adjacent problem with no dataset or backfill model, and are ranked separately under Agent Orchestration Frameworks. Two of the seven below are now one company: Prefect announced it was acquiring Dagster Labs on 13 July 2026.

LLM Observability

Platforms for tracing, evaluating and monitoring LLM and agent applications in production: span-level traces of model calls and tool use, offline and online evals, prompt versioning, and cost and latency telemetry. Distinct from AI SRE tools, which point AI at conventional infrastructure rather than observing the model layer.

Open-Source Auth & CIAM

Identity you can run yourself: self-hostable authentication servers and framework-level auth libraries covering sign-in, sessions, passkeys, MFA, enterprise SSO and multi-tenancy. The dividing line for this grid is a public repository, which is also the only thing that makes satisfaction measurable — the closed CIAM vendors sell the same outcome but publish nothing that can be scored.

Open-Source Business Intelligence

Dashboards, SQL exploration and metrics layers you can clone, self-host and read the source of. Two generations sit on this grid: the 2013-2015 self-hosted dashboard servers (Redash, Superset, Metabase), where you install a server and non-technical users build charts in a browser, and the 2021 code-first wave (Lightdash, Evidence, Rill), where metrics and dashboards are files in git reviewed like any other pull request. The scope is deliberate. Tableau, Power BI and Looker are the tools most BI buyers shortlist, and none of them publish a repository, so there is no issue-resolution rate to measure and no way to place them on a measured axis rather than a guessed one. They are excluded by the definition of this category, not left sitting on it unscored.
