The chair of Fideuram, Intesa Sanpaolo's private bank, received a WhatsApp message that appeared to come from the group CEO, Carlo Messina, asking for urgent help with an overseas transaction. A follow-up call used an AI-cloned voice imitating a senior lawyer. Transfers totalling €95 million (about $108 million) went to accounts mainly in China and Hong Kong. Reuters reported the case on September 25, 2026, and about €53 million has been recovered. AI-enabled fraud is now a board-level risk, and a vendor market has formed to detect it. This roundup covers that market by channel, and the process controls that matter more than any tool.
How big the problem is
- FBI, 2025 Internet Crime Report: the first year with an AI category, at 22,364 complaints and $893.3 million in losses, against $20.9 billion in total reported cybercrime losses. Most of the AI figure was investment fraud, with smaller amounts tied to business email compromise and romance scams.
- Voice cloning needs very little audio. McAfee found three seconds of public audio was enough for an 85% voice match with freely available tools.
- Corporate losses: a Sapio Research survey of 575 decision-makers put the average loss from a deepfake incident at nearly $450,000, and about $603,000 in financial services.
- The reference case: Arup lost about $25 million in 2024 after an employee joined a video call in which every other participant was a deepfake.
Every published figure is an undercount, because victims rarely report voice-clone fraud and often do not know AI was involved.
The vendor market by channel
"Deepfake detection" is sold as one category, but buyers face four separate problems: a fake caller, fake media in a meeting or file, a fake identity at onboarding, and a fake brand or executive online. Here are the vendors for each.
Voice and call centers
- Pindrop is the incumbent in call-center fraud. It scores calls for liveness and synthetic speech alongside device and network signals, and is used widely in banking and insurance contact centers. It took $100 million in venture debt from Hercules Capital in 2024.
- Modulate raised $25 million led by Future Ventures on September 28, 2026, bringing its total to $60 million. Its models analyze audio directly, including tone and synthetic-voice signals, rather than transcripts. It says its deepfake detector has ranked first on Hugging Face's Speech Deepfake Arena since March with a 1.1% equal error rate, and that hospitals use it against deepfake callers. These are company-reported figures.
Multimodal media: video, images and audio
- Reality Defender detects manipulated video, audio and images through an API and integrations with meeting and contact-center tools. It raised a $33 million Series A in 2024.
- GetReal Security, co-founded by digital forensics researcher Hany Farid, sells forensic analysis of audio, video and images to enterprises and governments.
- Hive offers deepfake and AI-generated content detection as part of a wider content moderation API, used by platforms and public-sector buyers.
- Sensity focuses on forensic deepfake detection for identity checks, media and investigations.
- identifAI, an Italian detection provider, argues that deepfake detection is becoming a basic layer of identity infrastructure. Its data shows the US accounts for 34% of tracked incidents, and X for 42.1% of the platforms where they appeared.
Identity verification and behavioral biometrics
- Incode and Sumsub run document and liveness checks at onboarding and include injection and deepfake detection for selfie and video flows.
- BioCatch analyzes how a user types, swipes and moves through a session to spot account takeover and coached victims. That works even when the face and voice are perfect fakes. Visa agreed to buy it for $2.4 billion in August 2026, the largest exit in Crunchbase's Q3 security tally.
Brand and executive impersonation
- Doppel finds and takes down fake websites, social accounts, ads and executive impersonations, using AI to triage at scale. It raised a $70 million Series C at a $600 million valuation in late 2025.
- Loti AI monitors and removes unauthorized uses of a person's likeness and voice online. It started with public figures.
Employee training and simulation
- Adaptive Security, backed by a16z and the OpenAI Startup Fund, runs simulated deepfake calls, texts and emails that use public material about a company's own executives. It raised an $81 million Series B led by Bain Capital Ventures in December 2025.

Process controls that work without a vendor
Fideuram and Arup were not losses that a better detector would certainly have prevented. Both came down to one person authorizing payments because the request looked and sounded right. Four controls close that gap at almost no cost:
- Call back on a known number. Verify any urgent, confidential or unusual payment request through a number from your own directory, never one supplied in the message.
- Require two people above a threshold. Rank should not exempt anyone. In the Fideuram case, the chair himself instructed the finance team.
- Agree on a challenge phrase for executives. A pre-agreed phrase that never appears in email or chat defeats a cloned voice.
- Treat "urgent and confidential" as a warning sign. Train finance and executive-assistant teams that secrecy plus time pressure is the pattern, whatever the channel.
Then add tools where volume makes manual checks impossible: contact centers, onboarding funnels and high-value meeting workflows. For the agent side of AI risk, where the attacker is your own software, see AI agent security vendors 2026.

What are the best deepfake detection tools in 2026?
It depends on the channel. For phone and call-center fraud, Pindrop and Modulate. For video, images and audio across many formats, Reality Defender, GetReal Security, Hive and Sensity. For onboarding and account takeover, identity verification and behavioral biometrics vendors such as Incode, Sumsub and BioCatch. For fake websites, ads and executive impersonation online, Doppel. Adaptive Security covers employee training with deepfake simulations.
Can deepfake detection software reliably catch AI voices?
On benchmarks, the best audio models are now very accurate. Modulate reports a 1.1% equal error rate on Hugging Face's Speech Deepfake Arena, which is its own reported figure. In production, accuracy depends on call quality, language and whether the attacker has tuned against the detector. Treat a detector as one signal that triggers verification, not as proof.
How much does deepfake fraud cost companies?
Individual cases run into tens of millions: Arup lost about $25 million after a deepfaked video call in 2024, and Fideuram lost €95 million in 2026. The FBI recorded $893 million in AI-related losses across 22,364 complaints in 2025, most of it investment fraud. A Sapio Research survey put the average corporate loss from a deepfake incident at nearly $450,000. All published totals undercount, because few victims report.
What is the most effective defense against deepfake CEO fraud?
A payment rule that does not depend on recognizing a voice or face: any urgent or unusual transfer is verified by calling back on a number from your own records, and needs a second approver. Detection software helps flag suspicious calls and meetings, but the Fideuram and Arup losses both came down to one person authorizing a transfer on the strength of a convincing request.
Are there free deepfake detection tools?
Some vendors offer free consumer checks or browser plug-ins, and McAfee bundles deepfake audio detection into some consumer products. For business use, free tools are useful for spot checks but not for screening calls or meetings in real time, which needs integration with your phone, video conferencing or identity stack.
